Week 6

Sorry I have been so lame at updates. Busy, lazy, crazy, pick an excuse and stick it to me! Essentially my team, Wolf Pack is at top. We beat Romania yesterday something like 2-1. Pretty good game. We kind of took it too them and they seemed a little shocked, and a little unable to find their rythym. I think they were missing a couple key dudes too. In any case, I'll try and be more regular. See ya!

Romania vs. Tillamook 3:3

EXPLAINER - This game was played to make up a game for Tillamook because they came into the league late, which doesn't make a whole lot of sense because it gives Romania an extra game. But whatever. Regardless, it was a well-played endeavor. Tillamook seemed a little hung over from their match with Atlas Sunday, but they still gave Romania a good tough fight. See you Wednesday!

Atlas squeaks past Tillamook on own-goal

PHOTOS by DAMIAN MULINIX
Showing more energy and tenacity than in previous weeks, Atlas squeaked past Tillamook by a goal in this week's Liga Hispania action.

A fiercely competitive team making its debut this year, Tillamook came at Atlas in a rush of quick passes and dangerous shots at goal. But Tillamook's early threats also seemed to summon the strength of an Atlas team that only weeks ago suffered its first loss in over a year.

Both teams seemed hell-bent on scoring first. The resulting pace was furious and the action end-to-end. In the 15th minute, Tillamook forward David Garcia's looping shot dipped over Atlas goalkeeper, Rafael Terrones, who fumbled the save but managed to keep the ball out of his goal. Just seconds later, Atlas nearly scored when Martin Pevez Tinoco launched a cannon of a shot just over the crossbar.

Atlas finally seemed to dominate control of the ball and the tempo of the game, but Tillamook's David Garcia nearly found the upper corner of the goal with another long shot. The game proved to be a battle of quick passes, fancy footwork, and scrappy goalkeeping.Atlas showed their poise and creativity ten minutes into the second half when Bernardo Tinoco let a low cross dummy between his legs to an onrushing forward Martin Zarazua, but the shot from only eight yards out missed wide.

The rapid tempo of the game did not abate as the half wore on. The play was physical but fouls were few and far between.
As Tillamook's quick passing game came and went, Atlas created more chances to score. Forward Miguel Tinoco was clipped on a dash at goal. His curving free-kick found its way around the Tillamook wall, but clanked hard off the goal-post.

But with just two minutes left in the game, it was another low hard cross from Tinoco that would prove fatal for Tillamook.
Tinoco dashed into the penalty box toward Tillamook goalkeeper Noe Mendez, then cut the ball low across the mouth of the goal. Tillamook defender Victor Lopez found himself backtracking to the ball which curved awkwardly, bounced of a shin, and ended up in the back of the net.

Officially declared an own-goal, the score did not stop Atlas from celebrating the win.

League kicks off! ATLAS UPSET!!!

PHOTOS by DAMIAN MULINIX

Atlas scored first, but it would be their last. The Ocean Park-based soccer team of the Liga Hispania was stunned by Romania, a team based out of Astoria, by a final score of 4 to 1.

Atlas, the league's returning champions, uncharacteristically created few decent scoring chances, as Romania, in its inaugural year in the league, tallied three first half goals.

The single Atlas goal came fifteen minutes into the game on a free kick from Bernardo Tinnoco. The shot was not well-placed but slipped between the legs of Romania goalkeeper Kiely Bondurant.

But Romania refused to crumble, and answered with a breakaway goal from Adrian Condrea at the 22 minute mark. Condrea lobbed the ball expertly over charging Atlas goalkeeper Rafael Temones.

Romania added another ten minutes later when forward Chris Senich shot from twenty yards out under a hard tackle from the Atlas defense.

As the match wore-on, Atlas strung together the usual number of well-timed passes, but failed to attack with any real threat. As Atlas remained hesitant, Romania kept up a fierce counter-attack.

Condrea scored again 40 minutes into the half when he slotted the ball perfectly from 20 yards out into the corner netting on a drop pass from Jay Flint. It would Flint's first of two assists.

Josh Long, coach and central defender for Romania was surprised at the returning league champs' lack of initiative in the final third.

"They weren't really trying to penetrate at all," said Long. "We won the fifty-fifty balls, and controlled the game quite well."

Things changed little for Atlas in the second half as Romania kept up the charge.

Romania forward Chris Lamb scored from just outside the penalty box when he chipped the Atlas goalkeeper.

Five minutes later, Atlas had a chance to score when the Romania defense was called for a handball in the penalty box. However, Bondurant saved face from his first-half blunder by decisively smothering the penalty kick from Atlas forward Norberto Tinoco.

The Romania goalkeeper remained solid the rest of the game, and had little trouble squashing the overly eager long shots fired from the Atlas front line.

Romania continued to dominate the rest of the half with nearly a dozen shots on goal. Atlas reacted late by pushing everyone forward, but the effort only made them more vulnerable to Romania's counter.

The upset gave Romania its first win in two games. Atlas has also split the last two games, but the loss is the team's first in over a year.

Toluca Upsets Vagabundos!

Toluca's goals seemes to come with ease Wednesday as they fought off a Vagabundos comeback and secured the 4 - 3 win over the second place team. Vagabundos loss puts them even with Wolf Pack in second place with both teams at 24pts.

Celebrating after scoring Toluca's fourth goal.

A mystery team showed up in place of the wilting La Piedad, putting up a good fight against Alianza. Who are these guys? I heard they were going to be part of the league but had to drop out at the last moment. It's too bad because they look like they have some pretty talented players.

Pooped...

Quick Update!

Sorry for the lack of updating this week. The table is roughly the same as last week. The major news is that ATLAS was able to secure its lead at the top by tying WOLF PACK 2-2. It was a great game, hard fought, with some great goals. Had WOLF PACK pulled off the win, they would have closed to within just a few points of ATLAS. I didn't update the blog with more pics because I was really concentrating on the game. You see, I play midfield for Wolf Pack, so I poured all my energy into the game. Look for more action pics next week, as well as an update on the Goal Leaders, who they are, and who has the best chance of getting the 'golden boot.' See ya'all next week! - DAVID

Special Photo Thanks

Special Thanks to Damian Mulinix who came out and shot these great photos of Wolf Pack vs Toluca. Damian is a staff photojournalist for the Chinook Observer in Long Beach, Washington and is easily one of the best newspaper photographers in the Northwest. It was kind of him to come out Wednesday and supply these photos to the site. To check out more of his work, take a look at this great photo blog at http://damianmulinix.blogspot.com/

Or, to take a look at the Chinook Observer online, check out - http://www.chinookobserver.com/ THANKS AGAIN!

ATLAS beat up on ITALIA in a 9 - 1 win. ATLAS remains the league leader in wins and goals. The Long Beach team now has 25 points. Four points ahead of VAGABUNDOS. WOLF PACK has 20 points.

As the goals added up, the Italia goalkeeper may have been thinking about a cold beer.

Week 8 / Jornada 8

ITALIA 4 - TOLUCA 3.

TOLUCA, in red, looks for another goal as this attempt just misses versus ITALIA. For the second time in two weeks, ITALIA played with just ten men, and pulled off the upset win.

Another great week of soccer with plenty of exciting action. Despite a few setbacks, I saw many examples of good sportsmanship between teams, with guys playing hard but picking each other up after hard fouls, shaking hands and moving on. We need this on the field more than ever right now, so it was cool to see opponents smiling and joking with each other, while still playing hard and fast. Keep it up.

TABLE:

ATLAS (22pts) 7-0-1
VAGABUNDOS (18pts) 5-0-3
WOLF PACK (17pts) 5-1-2
RIVER PLATE (12pts) 4-4-0
TOLUCA (9pts) 3-5-0
ITALIA (7pts) 2-5-1
ALIANZA (6pts) 2-6-0
LA PIEDAD (1pt) 0-7-1

ITALIA and RIVER PLATE both moved up in the table with strong wins. ATLAS maintained its hold at the top, while WOLF PACK and VAGABUNDOS nipped at each other for 90 minutes but failed to produce any goals. That match was their second tie, keeping VAGABUNDOS one point ahead of WOLF PACK and in second place.

Italia celebrate's a goal in a 4-3 win over Toluca.

OTHER RESULTS:

WOLF PACK 0 - VAGABUNDOS 0
RIVERPLATE 7 - LA PIEDAD 0
ATLAS 5 - ALIANZA 2

TOLUCA found plenty of room to play at midfield but couldn't come up with a win versus ITALIA.

Knocking heads hurts...Ouch!

ATLAS 5 - ALIANZA 2

Some Bad News . . .

Unfortunately I have to announce that there was a big stupid brawl this Wednesday between two teams that were not even playing against each other. This is not good for the league! I know tempers flare, and rivalries exist, but we have to stay cool. We have a great league going at one of the best public soccer facilities available in Oregon. The league is a privelage and we have to treat our right to the facility with the utmost respect. Fighting and getting the cops involved does not make us look good, and I know they could shut the league down if problems persist. So please, come to play, and not to fight, besides ... look who's watching.

Welcome! Bienvenidos!

Hello, and welcome to the unofficial blog of the La Liga Espana. We are an eight team league playing at a great complex in Warrenton, a town 5 miles from Astoria, Oregon. Most of the teams are from this area which also includes Seaside and Long Beach, Washington. The play is fast and furious, and very often the spirit is one of good sportsmanship and mutual respect. Basically, we play hard but have a lot of fun. Most of us are Hispanic, so there is plenty of Latin culture and language out there. There are a few gringos like myself too. Hopefully everything will also be translated into Spanish. I'm working on that one. If you have any questions about this site, feel free to leave a comment or send me an email. Hope you enjoy, and sorry I didn't get around to this sooner! Have fun! - - - David
